In Vitro Antistaphylococcal Effects of Embelia schimperi Extracts and Their Component Embelin with Oxacillin and Tetracycline

چکیده
Bacterial infections are in less-developed countries traditionally treated by remedies prepared from medicinal plants. Embelia schimperi (Vatke) is a plant used as a taenicide or disinfectant in Ethiopia, very often taken mixed with another plant species. In the present study, we examined two extracts prepared from seeds and twigs with leaves of E. schimperi and its main present secondary metabolite embelin for their antibacterial combinatory effect with oxacillin and tetracycline against sensitive and resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined through the broth microdilution method, whereas the combinatory effect was evaluated through fractional inhibitory concentration sum (ΣFIC) indices. Results show many positive interactions and synergy occurring in embelin and oxacillin combinations against 4 out of 9 strains (ΣFIC 0.203-0.477) and for embelin and tetracycline combination against 3 out of 9 strains (ΣFIC 0.400-0.496). Moreover, the resistance to oxacillin has been overcome in 2 strains and to tetracycline in 3 strains. According to our knowledge, this is the first study showing antimicrobial combinatory effect of E. schimperi as well as of embelin. These findings can be used for the further research targeted on the development of new antistaphylococcal agents.

Evaluation of anthelmintic potential of the Ethiopian medicinal plant Embelia schimperi Vatke in vivo and in vitro against some intestinal parasites
BACKGROUND Embelia schimperi has been used for the treatment of intestinal parasites especially tapeworm infestations for centuries in Ethiopia. However, there is lack of scientific based evidences regarding the efficacy, safety and phytochemical analysis of this plant despite its frequent use as an anthelmintic. This study has therefore evaluated the efficacy and acute toxicity of E. schimperi...
متن کاملAntimicrobial activity of 2,5-dihydroxy-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone from Embelia schimperi.
Chromatographic separation of an ethyl acetate extract from Embelia schimperi led to the isolation of a new compound identified as 2,5-dihydroxy-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (1) on the basis of spectroscopic and physical data. The plant's crude extract and pure compound 1 were assayed for in vitro antimicrobial activity against clinical strains of Salmonella spp., Proteus spp., Pseudomonas aerugin...
متن کاملAntiproliferative Properties of Embelia Ribes
Embelia ribes is a threatened woody shrub belonging to the family Myrsinaceae, which is sparsely distributed in the moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats in India. The previous reports showed the effect of Embelin in methylcholanthrene induced fibrosarcoma in albino rats besides enhancing their survival time. Embelin provided a good support for the chemopreventive effect against Nnitroso...
متن کاملA TLC Identification and Spectrophotometric Estimation of Embelin in Embelia ribes
A simple, rapid and economical procedure for estimation of Embelin by UV Spectrophotometer in Embelia ribes was developed and is described. The method is based on the identification of Embelin by TLC and on the ultra violet absorbance maxima in chloroform at 285 nm. A value of 4.80% w/w of Embelia was found in test simple.
متن کاملEstimation of Embelin in Embelia tsjeriam-cottam Fruits by HPLC to Standardize Harvesting Time
Embelin (2,5-dihydroxy-3-undecyl-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-benzoquinone) is a phenolic compound found in the fruits of Embelia tsjeriam-cottam and is responsible for the medicinal properties of the plant Thus the fruits are harvested at a large scale before maturity leading to depletion of population. Since the chemical constituents of medicinal plants are directly associated with the harvesting t...
